What to Do With All the Free Time on Contract

What to Do With All the Free Time on Contract

The Hours Between Waking Up and Going to Work

Most days on contract, you don't start until 4pm.

Rehearsal. Warm-up. Show. Done by 10. The morning and early afternoon are yours.

People don't talk about this part of circus life. The assumption from the outside is that a performing contract is relentless. And some are. Three-show days with training and physio can fill every hour. But a lot of the time, more than most performers admit, you have stretches of unstructured free time that you didn't plan for.

Most people fill it without thinking. Sleep in. Watch content. Wander around a city they'll leave in three weeks. None of that is wrong. But if it's all you do, you arrive home after a six-month contract having earned money and not much else.

The performers who come out of contracts ahead aren't always the highest paid. They're the ones who treated the free hours as an asset.

That could mean studying something. Starting an online income stream. Building a following. Learning a language or actively searching for the next contract.

The structure is already there. You just have to decide what to fill it with.

💡 Your challenge this week:
If you're on contract now, write down what you actually do between waking up and going to work. Is it intentional or just default? Pick one thing you could replace with something that compounds over the contract.

P.S. I've come back from contracts having saved money, learned things, and made progress on projects I never have time for at home. I've also come back from contracts having done none of that. The difference was never the contract. It was whether I had a plan for the mornings.
