Nobody Is Coming to Manage It for You

There's a quiet habit many performers fall into without noticing.

Waiting.

Waiting for the director to develop them. Waiting for the company to renew. Waiting for someone to notice their potential and hand them the next step. It feels reasonable, because on contract, someone else really does control the schedule, the casting, and the show.

But your contract is not your career. It's one chapter of it.

The company is responsible for their show. Nobody is responsible for your trajectory except you. That means keeping your footage current even when you're comfortably booked. Maintaining relationships across the industry, not just inside your current company. Training skills your current show doesn't need but your next one might. Knowing what you want your career to look like in five years, instead of just hoping the phone rings.

Performers who treat themselves as a one-person business have a different energy. They negotiate better, because they have options. They panic less between contracts, because they built the pipeline before they needed it. They make decisions from choice instead of scarcity.

The director casts the show. You cast your life.

💡 Your challenge this week:
Answer one question in writing: what do I want my career to look like in five years? Then be honest about this one: what have I actually done this month to move toward it? If the answer is nothing, that's not the industry's fault. Pick one action and take it this week.
