How to Control Pre-Show Nerves
How to Control Pre-Show Nerves
That intense mix of excitement and dread before a show?
Yeah—that feeling.
It makes your hair stand, you start to sweat or even need to 💩
All of a sudden the performance is finished, you breathe out and say, “Oh… that wasn’t so bad.”
Some performers live for that rush. Others hate it.
Either way—pre-show nerves are completely normal.
But they do need to be controlled.
Here are 3 tools to calm the chaos:
🧠 Psychological
Remind yourself: it’s a live show. That’s what makes it exciting—for you and the audience.
Trust your preparation. Let go of perfection. Anything can happen—and that’s the magic of circus.
💨 Physical
- Try this just before stepping on stage:
- Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds,
- Out through your mouth for 6 seconds.
- Repeat for 6 full rounds, focusing only on the breath.
You’ll be amazed how quickly it grounds you.
🔁 Long-Term Tactic
Build trust with yourself.
The more consistently you train under pressure, the more your nervous system learns to stay steady. Self-belief doesn’t come from hype—it comes from evidence and repetition.
🎯 This Week’s Challenge:
Next time you train, perform, or face a situation that makes you nervous, try one (or all) of these tactics.
Breathe. Refocus. Trust.
P.S. You’re training your nervous system just like any muscle.
The key to calm? Consistency.
