The After Thought
Are you a critic—or an acclaimer?
The moment your feet touch the ground or you step offstage, what’s your instinct?
“Here’s what went wrong,” or “That felt amazing”?
Neither reaction is wrong. But maybe… neither is particularly useful in that first moment either.
It’s natural to want to dissect a mistake or ride the high of a great run. But jumping straight to critique—or celebration—can skip over something more valuable: presence.
Instead of reacting right away, try this:
Pause.
Breathe.
Replay the moment in your mind without judgment.
Feel the sweat run down your head. Hear the crowd. See the lights.
Then, later—after you’ve had a chance to soak in the experience—review what worked and what didn’t. You may find your reflections are calmer, more accurate, and far more helpful.
💡 Your Challenge This Week: After your next few training runs or performances, resist the urge to comment right away. Just breathe. Feel. Remember. Then reflect later. Tell us—did it lead to better insight?
