The Signal Your Body Sends Before the Injury

The Signal Your Body Sends Before the Injury

You Heard It. You Just Didn't Want to Stop.

It wasn't sudden.

There was a week, maybe two, where something felt slightly off. A tightness that didn't clear after warm-up. A niggle on one side that you trained around without really addressing. A movement that felt a little less clean than usual.

You noticed. And you kept going.

Most circus injuries don't arrive without warning. They arrive after a series of warnings that got ignored. Not because performers are reckless, but because stopping feels costly. You're in the middle of a run. A skill is finally clicking. The show is in three weeks.

So you manage it. And manage it. Until one session you can't.

Learning to read your body early is one of the highest-leverage skills a performer can develop. Not every tightness becomes an injury. But every serious injury was once a tightness.

The signals to take seriously:
- Persistent discomfort that's there at the start of every session, not just the end
- Pain that changes how you move, even slightly
- Asymmetry. One side working differently from the other
- A skill that suddenly feels worse for no technical reason

You don't have to stop. You have to pay attention, adjust, and get the right person to look at it before it makes the decision for you.

💡 Your challenge this week:
Do an honest body scan before your next session. Is there anything you've been managing rather than addressing? If yes, book the physio appointment this week. Not next week. Do some extra self care; rolling out, ice baths and saunas.

P.S. The injuries that cost me the most time weren't the ones that happened dramatically. They were the ones I saw or should have seen coming and convinced myself weren't serious. The recovery time was always longer than the time it would have taken to stop earlier.
