The Floor is Lava – Your #1 Job as a Base

The Floor is Lava – Your #1 Job as a Base/Porter

“Your job is to keep the flyer off the floor. Period.”

Think of porting like playing ‘The Floor is Lava.’ You are the last line of defense between your flyer and the ground. This isn’t an optional skill—it’s THE skill.

🛠 Make ‘Basey-sense’ your superpower:
✔️ Always be aware of your surroundings
✔️ Use mats and spotters when needed
✔️ Keep your hands ready to catch, not just support
✔️ Prioritize safety over ‘sending it’

📌 Takeaway: Flyers are trusting you with their body and safety—never take that lightly. Your mindset should always be, “I will NOT let them touch the floor.”

💡 This weeks challenge:

Bases/Porters, check in with your flyer and see how they feel before doing a trick, apply the rules above and thank them for let you throw them around.

Flyers - Show appreciation to you base/porter for always looking out for you. If they don't, maybe send them our blog on, What it really means to be a base.

PS - I like to think of flyers as the jewels of circus, when you find one that is willing to put themselves on the line to do something amazing with you, hold them , cherish them and respect them.
